My son who is 9 loves vintage computers and telephones like me, So we figured why not combine our hobbies into one big project. We want to recreate the fun of the unix dial in days, and dialing in via PPP to the internet. The goal eventually will be to have 12 lines serving up Shell and PPP access via VOIP inbound at speeds around 14.4. So all of you who have old machines that have modems unused, youll be able to call into one of the inbound numbers and get online via shell and PPP. Accounts on the system will be free. Depending on what type of system you use will determine the access number. We plan to have a Sun Sparcstation 5 running SunOS 4.1.4 for dial in access, an HP 712 running HP UX 9.0, and a NeXTstation. Adding more as we find more older unix machines to put on the system as we go. Our project for the Mason Michigan Phone show was demonstrating analog modem connections from computer to computer through a PBX. It was a hit, We had the commodore 64 calling the Mac 512 and then both machines calling out to DiversiDial Station #34 on C*NET. We plan to use the following hardware Asterisk Server to handle call routing and C*NET connections Sun SparcStation 5 Running SunOS 4.1.4 HP 712 running HP UX 9.0.4 NeXTstation running NeXTstep 3.3 A regular old linux box providing shell and PPP access. It gives you a good reason to dust off those old computers, fire up your favorite terminal program and off you go :)

The loss of wildcards just shows the ignorance/stupidity/out of touch attitudes of the people who made these decisions... and their supervisors/management. And along those lines, my favorite (unfortunately true) saying about eBay is I've never seen a company work so hard to destroy the community that built it. The only people who I've heard complain about the loss of wildcards are those people who know what they are and how to use them. Those that don't complain fall under the people in my first statement classification :). I am constantly amazed by the prices some people ask for their goods including vintagecomputermeuseum... and get them. I did some research using TeraPeak on selected sellers, and realized the amount of money they were making. Eye opening would be a good description. Looking for parts to complete my PDP-8/e

Hi all -- So I got my 8/e about a decade ago -- just the main CPU unit, 8K of core and an SLU. Over the years I've gotten a few other parts and peripherals and now with the 32K RAM card coming from Vincent at some point, I'm almost to the point where I can assemble a useful system running OS/8. At the moment I have: - 8/e CPU, 8K core, SLU, RX02 and RK05 controllers. - RX02 drive (working) - RK05 drive (unknown, but clean) - ASR-33 teletype (working) I'm looking for the following to really tie the room together: - RK05 cabling (from RK8E to RK05) - An RK05 disk pack or two (16-sectored) - Rack mounting rails for the 8/e, the RX02, and the RK05 and: - An actual rack to put all of this in. An official DEC rack would of course be nice... and, while I'm at it: - A TU56 and controller. (Hey, a man can dream, right?) DLVUSB USB to DLV11J adapter

This is definitely one of those things that didn't need doing, but one or two people asked about a DE9 version of the tiny DB25-to-DLV11J PCB I did a while ago (that replaces a cab kit for DEC Q-bus serial ports that use a 9/10-pin Berg), and I didn't like the idea because I've always hated the PC DE9 pinout (I can't believe we're stuck with a quick hack that IBM did to cram a second connector on the bracket of the PC AT dual RS232 board -- it was widely despised at the time) and anyway it would work only with PCs. So I figured if it's going to work only with PCs, it might as well also work with new PCs (that don't have COM ports at all), so I did it as a USB thing: http://www.dbit.com/projects/#dlvusb It's simple (MCP2200 plus obvious stuff) and tiny (blank PCBs are $7.25 for three from OSH Park) and the page has links to schematics and Gerbers and the OSH Park project page. The soldering's no picnic (surface mount this time) so I may do this as a minor D Bit product if there's any interest. But otherwise ... have fun. John Wilson D Bit

Digital Group stuff

I am currently in the Denver area for a couple of days, and came across a guy with a bunch of stuff from the Digital Group (not DEC!). He has a few packed boxes, pretty heavy, so I really do not know what is there. Apparently he had struck a deal for the pile some time ago, but the buyer backed out when the shipping quote was figured. So anyway, it is probably unreasonable for the me to move the stuff to California (Bay Area) when I continue my roadtrip on Tuesday (I will be pretty loaded), but it is reasonable to think that I could haul the stuff when heading home east in a couple of weeks, as I pass back through the Denver area. So - any interest in this stuff? He says there is a lot, including some late model computer they made only four units of, before the bank shut the business down. If there is interest, I will see if I can get his to do an inventory and/or pictures (he is willing). I do not know about the price - probably not too bad. Let me know offlist ASAP! -- Will

Tektronix keyboards

I have 3 old Tektronix keyboards here; 2 are larger and one is smaller. The 2 larger ones are PN 119-2468-03 (missing "Menu" keycap) and 119-2468-00 (complete). Both of these have a large RJ45 type end. Square button with arrows instead of directional arrows. Smaller one is PN 119-1592-02, AT type connector, special keys above the 5, 6, 7 and 8 keys. It is complete. Octagonal button top left. These are NOT lightweight keyboards, but I would be happy to ship them. Somebody make an offer? Overland Data OD3210 error codes -- solved

Many thanks yet again to the very kind _Bernhard Wulf_, who took time out of his busy day to save my OD3210 by sending me a special procedures document which details resetting the NOVRAM and conducting a few calibration tests after servicing. Anyone with any Overland tape drive, feel free to email me directly and I'll send you the .pdf file... but send your thanks to Bernhard. So, to recap, replacing the battery on my 3210's PWB caused the battery backed-up non-volatile memories to get scrambled, resulting in an 4x/second flashing ALERT upon after-service POST. Using the special procedures (not documented in the user manual where they should have been), I was able to reinitialize the NVRAM contents and recalibrate the drive. I know for a fact that this same problem has stymied several people before me, some of whom probably disposed of their perfectly good drives as a result. Thanks also go out to Chuck Guzis and Tony Duell for their clues and suggestions. - John S.

Hi all, I recently acquired the above mentioned terminal in great shape. On power on, it shows a white screen with black characters, all keys work and echo locally. But when connected to a known good serial cable with a 9600 getty, I get maybe a little gibberish and no more local echo on keystrokes. Tweaking the baud rate dips has no effect, and possibly of note, the dip for toggling between white on black and black on white has no effect either. So, looking inside I don't see anything obviously wrong, no blown caps or damaged traces, but there are some unlabeled dip switches on the main board. Before I go further diagnosing, does anyone know what these switches do, or what their default configuration should be? Is anyone else operating one of these that could share experiences. If someone buys this, let me know. I own one of the IST terminals and use it regularily on Plato (Cyber1). Progress on new shop

Hi, I've made enough progress on getting my new shop set up that I thought I'd share. Novelty "Retro" Cell Phone Handset in an Acoustic Coupler?

Have any of y'all tried using one of those novelty "retro" cell phone handsets in an acoustic coupled modem? I wonder whether their output level and mic sensitivity are sufficient, and whether their dimensions are close enough to a good ol' Model 500 handset to fit an acoustic coupler well. I may just order one up and try it, but I figured I'd ask if anybody else has tried it first. It would be silly fun to dial up over my iPhone with an acoustic coupler attached to my TRS-80 Model 100, or the DEC LA12 Correspondent terminal I have on the way from the ePlace. Overland Data OD3210 error codes?

Many thanks to _Bernhard Wulf_, who found Overland OD32XX tape drive info and software at this extremely helpful link: http://www.pestingers.net/antique_computer_Gallery.htm From the User Manual, my unit appears to have a Critical Error (alert flashing 4x per second). This error translates into error 60, "Bad NOVROM magic" -- whatever that means (see page 41 of manual). This error if I understand it correctly makes sense, as I removed the button cell battery off the main PCB to replace it. Anything backed up by that battery would've been lost, so seemingly, the NOVROM contents were lost. Very sadly, the recommended service procedure for this fault code is "RC 1" -- Call a Service Tech to replace Main PWB. Insane that a battery replacement would render a perfectly good PWB useless. - John S.

Checking Contents of Unknown Disks

I have some SCSI disks with unknown contents which I would like to check before overwriting them. I don't even know what OS they were used with. The only systems I have to hand with SCSI are MicroVAXen, so I can check them for VMS format without issue. However, for the ones that are not VMS format I would need a way to find out what format they are. I was wondering if there is any VMS software for reading FAT disks (as that is a pretty likely format). According to Hoff (http://www.hoffmanlabs.org/vmsfaq/vmsfaq_012.html) there is VMS freeware that will read FAT diskettes, I am not sure if it will read hard disks too. Trouble is I don't seem to have that version of the Freeware, does anyone have version 6 and the WINFX software? Another way would be to use a PC SCSI adapter. I don't have one yet, but I think I will get one. I like the look of the Adaptec 2940AU. Regards Rob

BERG connectors for DEC cables?

I've asked this before but it seems like time to ask again. I'd like to make some _proper_ DEC-style cables with round shielded cable and true BERG headers on the end(s). I know that IDC connectors can be used as a substitute but I'd really like to be able to find the old crimp-pin and insert style. Does anybody have a source or even a non-DEC part number for the header box and/or pins? Note that it is actually a 44-pin carrier to center it in the 40 pin receptacle. Thanks, Jack

It was "hidden" in a closet in the old Mechanical Lab building. Because of that Nova 1220 experience, I've been infected with collecting and trying (also as a non-EE) to restore old computers, mostly PDP-8 family members, with a few Q-Bus PDP-11s, a VAX 4000-200, a Commodore 64, a TI99/4A, a Sinclair (I think), an Apple III (I think), a TRS80 Model III, a Canon BX-1, and various PC clones from the early '80s almost to today. Along with an ASR-33, an LPQ01 (I think), an RK-05, a half-dozen RL01/02s, a couple dozen disk packs, and a half dozen RX01/02s, literally thousands of 5.25-inch, a few-hundred 3.5-inch, & about a hundred 8-inch diskettes. Perhaps one of these days, I'll be able to rearrange my workshop to have room to take decent photos of my collection too. Bob

Recreating a Dial In ISP with Sun Sparc and HP PA RISC Hardware

My summer project is to recreate dial in shell access like we all used to. I have 2 machines that are candidates for it. an HP 712 system running HP UX 9.04 and a Sun Sparcstation 5 running Solaris 1.1.2. For PPP access I can set up a linux box as well. Another new computer lab...

Since others have been sharing their new digs, I thought I'd share mine. I moved a couple of months ago to a much larger house with a semi-finished (and dry) basement. (As you can tell from the photos, the refinishing was done sometime in the 1970s :)). Previously I had about 200 square feet of space, now I have more like 900-1000. Not quite as impressive as Guy's or Henk's, but I've managed to fit all my stuff in with room for future expansion... Just this week I got the last of the stuff out of my 10'x10' storage unit and I've gotten everything approximately where I want it, modulo a few boxes here and there. One thing I've discovered now that everything's under one roof: I have way too many keyboards... Here's what happens on power up: Push power button.. power LED *only* immediately comes on along with the door solenoid doing a test "clunk". Six seconds of blank panel, then the LEDs light up as I described above... so the CPU seems to be executing a POST which then fails. I'm wondering if the door open optical sensor on mine went bad. Not sure if you have access to yours, but if you turn yours on with the door held open, what kind of LED display do you get? Thanks very much, John

Any further luck? You have my curiosity. Been trying to get any HD to work with my Max80. Was considering bidding on a XEBEC 1410A but not sure if that will work or not from your description. AT&T 3B2/V2 feature card issue

Hi, This evening I finally revived my 3B2/310 by re-installing SVR3.0 and most of the associated software modules. However I'm still having one problem. Feature cards I install in slot's 2, 3, and 4 always report their ID as 0x0. Thus the firmware isn't able to associated a card name with the ID via the edt table. The cards are good. If I place them in slot 0, they report fine. PORTS, PORTS/HPP, EPORTS all report 0x0 in slots 2, 3, and 4 while a StarLAN NAU reports ID 0xff in those slots. Anyone have an idea what might be going on? Thanks, -Alan

Osborne Executive Exec-T Hard Drive Software

Hi. I'm looking for a copy of the Exec-T software from Gard Micro Systems that enables Osborne Executives with a hard drive to access and use the hard drive. My Executive has a Trantor hard disk, if that matters. I have the docs for Exec-T, but not the software itself. Exec-T includes the files CPM3.SYS, EIBIOS11.COM, EIFRMT11.COM, EIPOS11.COM, EICOPY.COM, MENU.COM, MENU.ASM, TSLCNFG.COM, DISKMGR.COM, ARKIVE.COM, WSKEY.COM, and CPMKEY.COM. FRTS on PDP-8 (ADVENT)

To get CHEKMO-II (which uses interrupts for I/O to the console) to run, I had to add some code to the interrupt service routine to ignore any pending interrupt from the second serial interface. Could the interrupt (output ready) from the second serial interface be causing this problem? I'd love to get Adventure running on the system. ALTMODE Key on Teleray Terminal

I was trying to start ADVENT again on my PDP-8, this time all with my Teleray 3511D terminal for a change (often I use minicom). I found that I could not escape to start the program. Instead, a '[' is printed, which is character code 133 octal. Escape is 033 octal. On minicom, things work just fine hitting the escape key on my keyboard. Is my terminal acting up? Is ALTMODE not defined as 033 on this terminal? Something else? If it's not acting up, any ideas how I can send a 033 from the terminal? Thanks, Kyle

subscription issues with cctech?

My patches for FreeBee to allow Unix to install and boot multi-user

I have now released my fixes for FreeBee to allow Unix to install and boot to multi-user mode. They are against revision d91346487fe9 of FreeBee (the last to use the original version of the MMU emulation) and can be imported with hg import. The installer complains about the floppies not unmounting properly, but that doesn't seem to affect anything. Also, Unix doesn't reliably boot to the login prompt unless you remove .lpstartsched from /etc/rc (it's easy enough to do this with a hex editor). I'm not quite sure what the problem is. Starting the print server from the command line doesn't cause a hang, and the system never seems to access the parallel port when the print server is started (be it from /etc/rc or the command line). I think the hang might be occurring somewhere after the print server is started. Another issue is that the ROM won't boot the hard disk at the moment (which I think might have something to do with the head select). The only way to boot the hard disk is to boot from a floppy with a filesystem but no kernel. The install root floppy (NOT the boot floppy) works for this. The floppies are available from Bitsavers (IIRC they are in ImageDisk format, meaning need to be converted to raw format to use them with the emulator). As currently configured, the emulator is hardcoded to use a hard disk image that is 67108864 bytes in size. DEC RK8E

So I have this DEC RK8E board set - and it has an extra card. The normal set is M7104, M7105, and M7106 - but this one has M7107 (called "WORD COUNT" on the etch) attached to a very official DEC looking cable harness with the connecting blocks. I thought the M7107 went with the RK07, and I thought the RK07 was never attached to PDP-8 systems. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? And I still want a couple of RK07s. -- Will

A while back I stumbled across a handy little website that had board outlines, jumper info etc. for ISA NICs - but for some reason I didn't bookmark it. Sound familiar to anyone (the site, not the failing to bookmark something useful)? I'm looking out for an NIC that will work in one of my XT machines; I was given another five* boards yesterday, but the maker/model info on four of them isn't obvious - they're all 16-bit ISA boards, but there's a chance that one of them might work in 8-bit mode on an XT bus. * well, six if you include the IBM token ring card. cheers Jules

By the time the Beeb was designed, Acorn had made a 6809 processor board for their System machines, so they must have had experience with the chip. THe Beeb is nice, but a Beeb with a 6809 processor would have been something else :-) -tony Hi! When I designed the N8VEM 6809 host processor it is loosely based on an article I read for the BBC computer called "Dragon in the tube". I am not very familiar with the UK microcomputers but apparently 6809 "coprocessors" were fairly common peripherals on their Z80 and 6502 designs. I used a similar concept for the N8VEM to allow its Z80 SBC to access the 6809 as a "host processor" peripheral on the ECB. One of the builders was able to get CUBIX running on the N8VEM 6809 host processor using the Z80 as its "IO processor". However, I can see how the implementation can get confusing because it is either a Z80 based system with a 6809 coprocessor or a 6809 based system with a Z80 IO processor. In reality it doesn't really matter but it's a matter of perspective. The N8VEM 6809 CUBIX implementation allows the use of ECB peripherals like IDE, video, floppy, serial, parallel, etc but it requires the Z80 to serve all the IO based on 6809 commands. I added the 6809 IO mezzanine board (power, ACIA, PTM, 2 VIAs, expansion bus) to give builders the option of using the 6809 host processor as a stand alone computer or to add separate IO to the N8VEM system when connected to the bus. The idea being to let the 6809 host processor interact with the outside world using its own IO and only involve the Z80 when absolutely necessary. The hardware seems to work OK but we'll see where the software goes. I think with CUBIX the 6809 N8VEM system becomes a lot more practical. The IO mezzanine fits on top of the 6809 host processor. You can see some photos here. These are out of date but give a good idea. Recently I fitted an improved serial cable and the nylon standoff hardware. This would be a great opportunity for anyone who would like to do some 6809 hardware and software hacking. FRTS on PDP-8

I've been trying to get Colossal Cave Adventure (ADVENT.SV) running under OS/8 with no luck. A few details: I've got 32k of core in a PDP-8/M (the entire backplane is filled!) and am using my SerialDisk software for emulating an RK05. That software can be found here: https://github.com/drovak/os8diskserver David Gesswein pointed out at VCF East that my software doesn't disable interrupts on the card, which is required for FRTS. Thus, I'm running a three-line program to disable interrupts on the M8650 I'm using for the SerialDisk interface before starting OS/8. Symptoms of attempting to run ADVENT (RUN SD1 ADVENT, where SD1 points to the second partition on the diagpack2.rk05 image) are that it takes about 30 seconds before just returning back to the dot prompt. No errors or anything. Lots of disk activity, but it never really does anything. I've used a fresh image with ADVENT on it, so there shouldn't be any issues of the files getting moved on disk. I also can run it under simh with no issues whatsoever. I suspect there is an issue with my SerialDisk software, but I don't know where I should begin to debug it. This is the first incompatibility I've come across with the latest version. Anyone willing to check it out on another system to confirm an issue? I was hoping to show this off at the second annual Vintage Computer Festival Southeast, but at this rate, it's not looking good. Can you help me with a scan of the program listings that are in the S/32 CE maps ? -- I assume he's run into something like a done interrupt not occurring in the simulation..
