My summer project is to recreate dial in shell access like we all used
to. I have 2 machines that are candidates for it. an HP 712 system
running HP UX 9.04 and a Sun Sparcstation 5 running Solaris 1.1.2. For
PPP access I can set up a linux box as well.
Anyone ever thought of doing this or how it could be accomplished??

I used both Solaris 2.4 and 2.5 as a PPP client back in the day. As I recall,
in addition to other files, I recall also having to configure some of the UUCP
files also. But enough reminiscing.
Overall, I would point you to Mr. Bill's sunhelp.org web site, where, as of May
2005, he has been hosting the "UNIX Serial Port Resources" that had long been
created and consolidated by Stokely Consulting.

But seriously, If you can't find all the resources you need under this page, it
may not be possible to be accomplished.

mgetty should be a start. Some edits to /etc/ttys and off you go, if I
understand it correctly.
You'll only be able to support v.34 (33,600 bps) speeds because v.90/v.92
56kbps access requires high-end telephony hardware and a digtal phone network
connection (e.g. ISDN, T1).
