Here's an interesting question: Will an EMP
kill a floppy? Since it
takes a very strong field to erase one, I'm inclined to think "no".
I don't know how the magical EMP field would have a different effect at a
distance, but don't know about that. I know we were doing a lot of
research at the time for a government lab which was related to radiation
and electronic effects, specifically to make systems resistant to EMP
effects and radiation exposure effects, so I wonder if EMP would be that
much of an issue. certainly in most consumer electronics it might be.
But as an electric field, not a magnetic one.

As an NBC specialist in danish Home Guard, I'm inclined to agree with Jim.
As the word says, it is an electromagnetic pulse, with frequencies all over
the spectrum. This will make all metal conductors act as antennae, so
electronic components attached to those conductors will blow up, depending
on the length of the "antenna" = signalstrength. In days long-gone, when I
was in Civil Defence, we even had discussions on whether we should keep our
manual telephone exchanges active, or not, as there were no electrnic
components in those exchanges.
So, I would say no, but I would hate to put it to the test (in my vincinity)
!
