Hi,
I've got a Superbrain computer from Intertec that I'm trying to get running.
The EPROM is blank (all FF's). I'm guessing over time it erased itself.
I tested my eprom programmer with another 2716 just to be sure.
Recently, I got access to another Superbrain, but it's EPROM was also bad, (all 00's).
I'm hoping someone, somewhere, can make an image of this Eprom and send it???
Many Thanks,
Josh Bensadon,

All,
Two of my kids are competing in this years BEST robotics
design competition. Rules are here, FYI:
http://www.bestinc.org/b_game_rules.php
The competition is to build a robot which will assemble logic
element stand-ins into logic gates and CPU elements (not actual ones,
everything is sylized so that the robots can be made out of easily
available macroscopic materials). However, an important element of
the competition, on which the older child is working, is to write a
"business case" for such a robot - do market research, in essence,
and convince investors why such a device is useful.
When I heard "market research" I immediately thought of this
group as probably the best concentration of knowledge anywhere on why
anyone would want to build custom-configured logic circuits as
opposed to using a generic general-purpose microcontroller for the
same task.
I *think* I know part of the answer. My thoughts are generally:
1) Anything custom-configured to the task at hand can have number of
logic gates, number of transistors, etc. optimized to that task.
Register length can match precision of sensors, etc. Thus, *all else
being equal*[1], minimum resources (power, heat generated, etc.) will
be required by the resulting system.
2) Anything custom-configured can have performance optimized - state
machines or flip-flops (vs. combinatorial logic) implemented only
when necessary, path lengths shortened where possible, etc. to
provide minimum feedback-control times.
3) Anything custom-configured can have minimum complexity. For
mission-critical applications, this means it becomes exponentially
easier to "prove" correct control system functionality and to predict
performance even in the case of SEU or other problems;
general-purpose microcontrollers are much more difficult to validate
in this sense.
I would love comments, and particularly references (places to
look on internet, conference proceedings, etc.) from anybody who
would care to provide them. Replies on the list to the extent you
think they are on-topic, or direct to me and my cc'd daughter if off
topic. Thanks in advance!
[1] I know microcontrollers have the advantage of gate size *far*
below what any discrete components currently can achieve; that's the
caveat I'm trying to leave with the "all else" comment. I assume part
of the business case has to be that a robot assembling logic designs
can be made arbitrarily small so that gate feature size for the
discrete logic can compete with gate feature size for large-scale
IC's.

Hi all,
I found a Sceptre set-top box without the keyboard a while back, and
finally got around to checking it out. Just for curiosity's sake, I took it
apart and photographed the insides. Pictures for the equally curious:

Has anyone managed to get a Sceptre or other Videotex box to do anything
besides keeping papers from blowing away in the 21st century? I have an
Asterisk server and analog card that I was thinking might could send some
data to the box to display some messages, etc. How feasible would this be?
Is there protocol documentation available?
Also, is this box basically useless without the wireless keyboard? Does
anyone have a spare keyboard?
Thanks,
Kyle
Hi!
Do you remember the Z80 based machine I spoke about, some time ago?
Well, I connect to with Putty, and I noticed that the first character of
the output is missing. I'll explain better with an example.
I see

instead of

So I captured the whole session and saw these sequences..

Hi folks,
I have a lot of 5 Digital LK401 keyboards. I am asking $20 each plus
shipping from 91942 (San Diego). Contact me off the list if you're
interested. Thanks!

Hello,
Does anyone have an electronic copy of the manual for the Norwegian Tandberg TDV2324 and/or it's OS, called "TOS II"?
I'm getting it to boot TOS II from 8" drive, however i have no idea how to get it to boot CP/M.
Best regards
Jacob Lindberg
>From the VC forum:
I have several old terminals that have been wrapped in plastic for the last
3 decades or so that I'd like to give away: (a) DEC VT-131 (b) DEC VT-241,
and (c) a Wyse 350. All three have keyboards and original manuals, and all
were in excellent shape when I put them away. I live in Moreno Valley, CA,
and I would prefer to have someone pick up whatever they want if possible.
If anyone is interested I'm willing to plug any or all in to make sure they
still power up and take them to UPS, but boxing and shipping is on you. I
don't know if this is the right place to list these, but I thought I'd try
to see if anyone wanted them before I just recycled them. Seemed a shame to
just scrap them, but I need the space.
(No email addy; PM on VCF if interested).

After coming very close to getting a couple of parts for my Sun 2/120 and
striking out yet again, I figured I'd ping to see if anyone has any other
leads.
I'm looking for a Sun 2/120 front plate (side plates would be great too, I
have some that need restoration, but if I could find some ones in better
shape, would save some time). I was chatting with someone in CA who had
a empty 2/120 chassis, which also would fit the bill... I have a chassis
but wouldn't mind have one to "build up from"... I would like to get one
and get it really cleaned to start from, without tearing out everything
>from the existing one that is still "together"... would make it easier to
work from, since I have 2 back-planes and 2 power supplies... (and it's not
clear if both sets are good...)
Also a Sun 2 Keyboard and Sun 2 mouse.
Drop me a mail off line if you have a lead, or have some to trade/sell.
Earl
