I am cleaning out the garage. Found a couple more RA-81 pieces to pass
on. These items are light enough that there is no problem shipping
them. Items are located in the Seattle area.
The drive spindle is about 7" diameter and 6" tall. The platters were
stacked on vertical separators with the spindle in the center. There is
a pleated air filter that goes around the inside, center of the spindle.
The disk enclosure is about 16" wide, 18" long and 7" tall. It held the
platters, spindle and head assembly.
As far as price, make an offer. I really just want to get stuff out of
my garage, but, if someone wants to pay for the stuff that I am getting
rid of, that would be awesome.

New subject: MF7114 and the CPS/1
Hi I was wondering if anyone had any info or picturesof the CPS/1. I've done some
searches on the web and only found limitedinformation.Dwight

FYI, this is called an "HDA", for "head-disk assembly.

apparently he doesn't have the entire sealed HDA.

I think I have a dead one... I've got at least one working RA81 and a
parts donor. Sometime later this year, I might be in a position to
offer what the OP is offering - I've been watching the thread to see
how much interest it generates.
Of course what one could do is take a gutted RA81 and mount some other
drive inside the empty shell - presuming you could tap into the
original light/switch panel, it wouldn't look bad and would weigh a
lot less.
I'd rather move a rack of those than a "real" SA600...

Heh. The RA81 HDA was an often-failed component. I had a deal to buy two racks of
RA81's several years ago from a surplus computer dealer - and when I went to go take a
look at them, it was painfully obvious that every one of them was missing the HDA. Just
the motor and the boards/PSU were in the boxes, the entire HDA was missing. Apparently
they must have sold off the HDA's a long time ago.

As I dig through the stuff in the garage, I'm finding some documentation gems.
I located a TEK 4010 service manual, checking on bitsavers shows only
the users manuals.
Is this something common?

Four of them (assuming you'll count RA82s as well). My biggest concern
is that the heads are only good for so many takeoff/landing cycles, so it's
best to leave the drives spinning 24x7. As you've said, the HDAs are the
most common failure - the rest of the drive is pretty reliable.
BTW, I'd love to find a working HDA for an RA80 (not 81 or 82) to make my
730 "like new" again.
