Its my understanding that there was a rich 3rd party hardware market
for frame buffers and other graphics hardware that plugged into DEC
equipment. The early E&S equipment was essentially a graphics
peripheral for a minicomputer. By 1986 they were probably working on
the Shadowfax graphics for the VAXstatsion 8000, though.
