I'll definitely be looking at alternatives in

this is that it appears the shipper didn't bother to insure the package,

wanted me to insure it". Gee, now why wouldn't I want it insured? :-(
It has already been mentioned but Fedex now has a Ground service which is
great for competition. For the most part, shipping anything bigger than a
book was always cheapest by UPS. Now that Fedex has a comparable ground
service (I believe they call it Green) there is an alternative. Even
better, the rates are apparently cheaper with Fedex.
As far as books and magazines go, it is always cheaper to ship using the
US Postal Service book rate. You must request it at the counter. In some
cases you can save up to half the shipping costs.
It is also worthy of note that disks and tapes also qualify for the book
rate.

Of course, most of this applies to the U.S.
