Has Japan upgraded? I've got some old Japanese kit of which the name
plate clearly says "100V 60Hz" I seem to remember that the lower
distribution voltage was a trap for American ex-pats who'd bring over
refrigerators and the like. Much shorter motor life under lower voltage.
I'm in fine fettle--my line voltage monitor says I'm running at 127V
right now.
FWIW, I didn't bother grinding down the original crowned pulley on the
8" drive to accommodate 60Hz--I rummaged around at Halted and found a
flanged timing pulley with exactly the right diameter. It's still
working to this day, some 26 years later. I disassembled an old
open-frame Power One linear supply, mounted the transformer and PCBs in
the drive enclosure (from Jade) on standoffs and connected only one of
the dual primaries to the AC supply--the other was hooked in series with
the first, used to drive the 220 V motor.
I got the drive NIB for, IIRC, $5, as Halted didn't think there'd be a
market for an oddball drive like that.
The good old days, when you could actually scrounge something useful
from the electronics junk shops in the Bay Area.
