Okay, an autotransformer then. Not much different, except that you do
sacrifice line isolation. Dual primary transformers that can be
configured as 120/240V used to be very common, but that doesn't help
your frequency issue.
I have an old Panasonic laser printer that *was* a 220V unit with a
rather large step-up transformer added by Matsushita for North American
(and probably Japanese) operation. The PSU is linear with its own
transformer.
