Another terminal question. I have an ADM-5 here which
works fine but when
switched off, the display colpases into a very bright vertical line and then
to a single point in the center of the screen. This then lasts for about 10
seconds and always happens regardless of the brightness setting. Question is,
is this normal and if not, is it likely to damage the phosphor over time?
Back in the '80s, I replaced the white phosphor CRT in my TRS-80 Model
4 with a longer persistence amber tube from Langley-St. Clair. The Model
4 exhibited much the same behavior as you describe, and it did indeed
burn the phosphor in a short time. To prevent further damage, I installed
a switch in the 12VDC power line for the monitor board, and always turned
it off first, before turning off the main power to the Model 4. It was
never a problem with the original CRT, only the replacement.
This was a total hack, but it prevented further damage to the phosphor.
I'm sure there are better solutions.
