Probably - I know of at least a few "makers" that are into old tech of all sorts. Try it, and if it flops, do not go next year. I think it is completely retarded that they picked NYC for the first East Coast event. Boston or DC would have been better. The only things made in Silicon Alley in NYC are web pages and flash animations. -- Will

I assume this is related to Make magazine. I've seen a few issues of that in the UK (it is hard to find in bookshops, anbd impossible to find in newsagents...), and from what I've seen it encourages good old 'hacking'. Not necessarily of computers or even electronics, but making things, tinkering, creating, etc -- things that many of us on this list hold dear. Hmm.. I am not sure a display of classic computers is exactly on-topic (may be best ot ask the organisers), but I would ahve thought that making stuff related to classic computers (e.g. the various disk reader projects) or using classic computers in creative ways would be very well received. Buit I;ve neve attended such an event, so I can't be sure. As to whether you want to be involved, that is very much up to you. -tony

I've displayed vintage computers at 3 of the last 4 West Coast Maker Fairs and it has gone very, very well. This year a number of CHM docent trainees "worked" the booth with me and had a blast. We got a fairly large display space (3 tables in a big booth) and we were packed open to close both days. I had folks playing with machines during setup and teardown! You are well within the spirit of the Maker Faire even if you aren't actually "making" things. You are still keeping them alive and happy and the attendees love the nostalgia vintage machines offer. I've gone totally hands-on with each display and made sure to include as many familiar machines as I can since the audience isn't quite as geeky as we are. So, for me anyway, lots of Apples, Atari's and Commodores and fewer Northstars, Eagles and IBM 5100s. That said, I did have people switching in programs on an Altair 8800 this year, alongside the Apple ][e, C-64, IBM PCjr and Atari 800. Update .... the event was GREAT and unlike anything I've been to ..... very glad that we went. Our booth was very well received. We showed a Pong machine, Altair, C-64 with Shredz64 (Guitar Hero), and networked C-64 gaming (Artillery Duel.)
