16c550s are cheap as dirt.  And you can stick a 16c850 or whatever the
latest incarnation is to a PLCC to DIP adapter.

  I've lately been doing the data transfer stuff
using STM32F407
 development boards. 
Chuck really has the right answer here. UART chips aren't going to
patch over that.
