As folks may have read about my recent VT103 rescue....
Well, regarding the disks I want to end up imaging.... the 4 disk set
of RT is on Wabash diskettes ! (All the other 8" diskettes are almost
all Digital brand, but those 4 are Wabash).
The oxide looks ok, but a scuff near the hub area with my fingernail
was able to remove a tiny amount of material... I think when I get to
imaging those 4 I'm only going to have a shot or two each.
Any suggestion (besides toss the 4 diskettes right after imaging them)
?
Also, anyone know if the 8" drives in the RX02 itself use a standard
interface at all that could be connected to something like a Kryoflux ?

Unfortunately not. If I understand right, DEC would buy Calcomp drives
and pull the PCBs off so they could use 100% their own stuff. You're much
better off attacking at the RX02 interface level. It's not at all SA800-like
either, but at least it's pretty reasonable.

You probably won't get that far--the drive head will plow a groove in
the media and then it's all downhill after that.
The only way that I know of that even stands a chance of being able to
read those awful things is to remove the cookies from the jackets and
bake them (the cookies) for several hours (3 or 4) at 140F/60C in a
well-controlled oven (don't let things get too hot or you'll destroy
them). Replace in the jacket and then do your imaging right
away--you'll anywhere from a few hours to a few days where the oxide
won't shed. After imaging, sell the disks on Etsy for decorations.

A cookie sheet, obviously.

I was going to comment on the relative merits of a Silpat vs. paper
towels, etc. (which probably wouldn't fare too badly in a 140?F oven),
but realized I had no direct experience. I had totally forgotten
about parchment paper, which is all the more amusing since we just
ran out of it yesterday for more conventional baking purposes.

There's actually a US patent on the process that describes it )as it
applies to magnetic tape). There's plenty on this on the audio tape forums.
Baking parchment is pretty good for this purpose.

There's actually a US patent on the process that describes it )as it
applies to magnetic tape). There's plenty on this on the audio tape
forums.
Baking parchment is pretty good for this purpose.

It's actually called Nu Finish and was manufactured by 3M, but now done
by someone else with a reformulation. By all reports, I've read that
it's not as good as the old stuff and indeed, my experience does seem to
bear that out (on 1/2" tape anyway). You might be better off trying
some plain old Cocamide DEA, which is a fatty acid used as a lubricant
by some manufacturers. It's available in bulk.
I believe that NuFinish mixes a fatty acid up with a fine silica for
their product, if the MSDS is to be believed. I don't recall if a
surfactant was part of the witches' brew.
Baking alone should work for now.
