Yes, throwing scrap guys a big list of specific model numbers is *not*
the main way to go. Remember that the guys they hire to load and
unload the trucks probably do not know where to find the model numbers
of the machines, even when they are painfully obvious to us. Some of
the guys may not even be able to read.
Give them simple rules.
For IBM stuff, things to looks for that warrant pulling from the
"grinder", as they apply to good machines:
1) Large. The size of a small fridge, at least.
2) Blue. Sometimes red or yellow, rarely gray. Not black.
3) Big black rectangular metal name tags lettered IBM are very good,
as are small bare aluminum square ones. Oval ones maybe good.
4) Control panel with switches and lights always are good, even if
small, like the size of a magazine.
5) Lots of small circuit boards or modules inside.
If most of these conditions are met, the machine is probably worth
their time to ask and maybe resell, rather than scrap.
The IBM virtual museum on their website is a good place for pictures.

For other defunct maker of large systems, just the name should warrant
pulling - Control Data, Burroughs, Univac.

Any whole
or parts of VAX 11/780, 11/785, 11/725
11/750 should be added to that list I think.
Definitely...as should 11/730.
