Well, we finally managed to pick up the huge collection of computers
from a basement in enschede, The Netherlands.
Is was quite a project.
after visiting the place to get an idea about what there was and how to
get it out of there, we made a plan. the key problem was that almost 90
percent had to come through a small hatch 80x80cm. :-)
and the collection included pdp11's, Control Data diskpack drives,
microvaxes, SGI's, IBM RT machines, an IBM system/36 and a lot more
heavy stuff.
We rounded up around 15 people and a lot of transporting hardware an we
managed to get everything out in one day. :-)
To have a souvenir of the occasion we set up some camera's taking a
picture every 5 seconds and made a nice film:

That was an impressive job. A nice demonstration on how to do something like that in an

haul. The little bit of rolling conveyor there was a stroke of brilliance.

Als er soms Philips apparatuur tussen zit, mag je het zeggen. Speciaal
harddisk PT 6875 en/of 76, oftewel X1215/X1216. We zijn bezig met het
restaureren van zo'n systeem, en hebben harddisken nodig

I started out on IBM S/34 & S/36 systems. A long time ago.
I would love to relive the experience, but I think that even if a S/36 showed up
on my front door that I could provide the power it needed. The PC cased baby/36
systems aside.

How was it that all of these items were stored in what looks like a dirt
basement crawlspace under a block of residential flats?
Was the _only_ access through that 20 x 20 (?) portal in the wall?
Why is there a dirt basement under a residential block?
Either way, it's still just a big WOW - and a HUGE THANK YOU to yourself
and the entire crew for preserving such a massive cache of vintage
hardware. History owes you a great deal of thanks for your efforts..

well, the room where the camera was hanging off the ceiling was the
original cellar of the flats on the university campus. but when they run
out of space there then they just had to open the hatch..
Computers came in in small batches over the last 30 years or so.
And yes, the 80x80cm portal was the only entrance. we had do cut the
legs of some 19" HP9000 cabinets to get them out. we had no idea how
they cam in originally. :-(

It's not all that uncommon at least east of the Mississippi, and you don't
even have to be on the east coast or something... before my girlfriend and
I bought our current home, we were renting the first floor in another house
in the same city built somewhere around the middle of the 19th century
(really! in Michigan! I think it pre-dated statehood here...) and that had
a completely dirt-and-rock basement.
It didn't do the best job of keeping the bugs out, but it was always dry.

poured for the furnace in the 1920s, and the rest of the floor in the 1950s
or 60s.
But those residential blocks look to have been built in the late 60s or
mid-70s perhaps. You don't see dirt floors in mid-20th century
constructions, at least not in my USA.

Oh ok, I see.. that room with the hatch is really just a crawlspace then,
is that it? Now it makes sense, as to why it just has a small access hatch
in the wall.. and in that case, sure, I get why it only has the native dirt
below. My place is the same way, in the sections of house built over
crawlspace.

A raised floor over a shallow foundation is still the standard mode of
construction in my parts of the country where full basements aren't
feasible. This leaves a crawl space between the main deck of the
building and the ground below. Very often, this space is also used for
storage.
The blueprints for my own home, built in 1980 include a full basement,
but also specified a 600 square foot "crawl space" to house the
mechanicals for the building. Said "crawl space" turned out to have an
11 foot ceiling with windows. Needless to say, it's no longer a crawl
space. :)
The guy who shot the elevations for the place must have been hung over
on a bad Monday...
