The manual lists a serie of options, among others the
ability of emulate
tek 40xx graphic terminals.
I'm interested in this feature, but it's not clear to me if a particular
version of the terminal, or a particular board is needed.
The maintenance manual mentions a 26-pin header for the "graphics
board". The character-mode video output is handled by a 2674 AVDC,
which does seem to have some bitmap graphics capabilities, but page 4-19
states that the terminal uses character cells. At least one gate array
is in the video output chain, and combines the output from the AVDC with
other attributes and control signals to produce the final video signal.
It's possible that gate array can also substitute a graphics video
signal feed for part or all of the output, or even overlay it.
The operator manual mentions optional graphics firmware.
Furthermore, the manual pictures two different
motherboards, normal and
extended, but what it's the difference?
Again from the maint manual, there are two versions, "gate array logic
board" and "enhanced gate array logic board". Brief reading of the
maint manual doesn't leave me with the impression that the differences
are dramatic.
Finally, there's a way to identify the hardware /
software options of the
terminal with some key combination, our some special command?
According to the OM, the code to enable the optional graphics board is
"ESC m". You can ask the terminal to send its identity string with "ESC
M", but it likely only includes firmware version and RAM size.
