Did anyone hear that some bureaucrat, in charge of purchasing for the
city of Los Angles, has sent a letter to all of the city's suppliers
of equipment, asking them not to use the "insenstive" words "master"
and "slave" in relation to equipment sold to the city? Maybe this
means that there will be a glut of politically incorrect surplus
computer equipment and documentation available there. Of course,
they'd probably recycle it into scrap so as to not risk offending
purchasers... too bad they don't just recycle the political
correctness into something else.

When I was doing contract work at Motown Studios - Berry Gordy forbid the
use of those terms in relation to SMPTE devices... we had to use 'talker'
and 'listener' (like GPIB).
No use explaining the difference between 'content' and 'intent'... ;}

When I was

But that means something totally different!
The 'talker' is the device that outputs data -- the 'writer'
The 'listener' is the device that inputs data -- the 'reader'
The 'master' is the device that controls the transaction (outputs
addresses, etc)
The 'slave' is the device controlled by the master.
On many buess (although not all), in any transaction there will be a
master and a slave. There will also be a talker and a listener. But
whether the master is the talker or the listener depends on which way
data is to flow.

Sounds like someone is carrying around some serious
historical baggage ;/
Funny thing, I don't see why some people are so sensitive to this
issue and slavery in the U.S. Look at how many whites came over to
the U.S. as intentured servants, or how many had ancestors in places
like Greece and Rome who were slaves, etc. All of the sniveling over
slavery in the U.S. is so childish, particulary when one considers
that their own people (or members of warring tribes who captured them)
sold them to the slave traders at a nice profit... and let's not
forget that there were some very wealthy black slave traders and
plantation owners in the U.S. as well. Of course, the politically
correct won't tell that side of the story, they just want to tell the
politically correct half-truths.
Of course, such political correctness works against us all, as it
causes people to overlook the fact that many people, including U.S.
citizens, have all become slaves to an overbearing, tax-hungry,
governments run by power-crazed, greedy and short-sighted politicrats.

I am not sure when those words first got applied to electrical/mechanical
devices, but there have been 'master' and 'slave' clocks for over 100
years, and I don't intend to change those terms...
