I've asked this before but it seems like time to ask again. I'd like to make some
_proper_ DEC-style cables with round shielded cable and true BERG headers on the end(s). I
know that IDC connectors can be used as a substitute but I'd really like to be able to
find the old crimp-pin and insert style. Does anybody have a source or even a non-DEC part
number for the header box and/or pins? Note that it is actually a 44-pin carrier to center
it in the 40 pin receptacle.

Hi Jack,
If you are referring to the ones used on the kl8 and dl11, I have complete
cables.
I know about where there are and it will require some digging.

They seem to still be made -- Farnell list them as part of the 'extended range'
[1]. See here :

The contacts are extra, this will not be a cheap solution :-)

There may well be other sources of them.

Just a few weeks ago, I helped clean out a bunch of boxes from the
garage of someone who used to make DEC-style cables for Scherer's. I
have folders full of notes to go through but I think I may have those
numbers on a build sheet or an invoice in the stack.
For professional-grade cables, you'll need a specific crimp tool. I
know I have that and will check the case for part numbers.

a part number.

Not the same BERG but I have used:
102387-9 housing with 87667-2 or 6-87756-8 contacts (lots of different
contacts with different plating and cost) (Digikey etc)
XG5N-401 with XG5W-0231 (Mouser etc)
These have extra plastic on the ends so I didn't have problems with
mismating the 40 pin version. They do have the polarizing key though it
snips off reasonably easily.
When making a cable with just the signals needed for RS-232 the connector
doesn't stay mated that well if cable is wiggled. Putting some extra
contacts in helps.
