For a one-off
design, where size is no real issue, I much prefer to
grab a handful of TTL pacakges and start soldering.
...for small things, so would I. (Well, I'd probably start with
solderless breadboarding in most cases.) But for something requiring many thousands of gates, like, oh, say, a PDP-11 CPU,
to pick a totally
random example :), that's not quite so practical.
I am not convinced. A PDP11/05 is just 2 hex cards. Perhaps a couple of
hundred packages. That's easily doable (as in I've built things of that
sort of complexity).
