Compared to most IP cores, which come as binary, it's quite
open. You have access to the full source code. Registration
is a relatively small price to pay, IMO.
No one uses AHDL. I'm frankly surprised it's still supported
at all. I STRONGLY recommend you use either Verilog or VHDL
if you want any hope at all of portability. Both schematic
capture and weird, proprietary languages will tie you
inexorably to a single vendor, and you don't want that.
