Well, there were services like that. Remember Yahoo! auctions? OnSale?
UBid? On UBid, (and this may still be true), every new bid caused the
auction to be extended by 10 minutes. An auction could run for weeks.
I don't think that model would work very well for eBay, which depends on
traffic as their model. Knowing that an auction has a specified
beginning and an end is very attractive.
EBay's bidding system is sui generis, as nearly as I can tell.
