Maybe one of the primary uses of 264x tape storage was
for HP 1000
storage media. One of the standard boot proms for the HP 1000 will
boot from 264x tape media. I have a set of HP 1000 diagnostic
programs on 264x tape media. Unfortunately they are almost all
unreadable.
Unreadable as in the media is physically damaged or unreadable as in
the physical shape is OK but putting it through the drive doesn't
yield anything useful?
It wouldn't be the first time I've seen someone use a different read
head with older tapes that were "unreadable" and squeeze out the bits
with modern signal processing equipment and an analog signal from a
compatible head.
