My guess is it's usually a combination of the former and people who change their mind
about what the maximum they really want to pay is. I'm pretty careful to determine
ahead of time what my maximum is, then put it down (once) and walk away; otherwise,
it's challenging not to give into the impulse to "win" it and tack more on
if I'm outbid.
Yeah, sometimes they're shills, and it's hard to tell. But in most cases, I
don't think they are. I just have to laugh when I've put down what I'm
comfortable paying for an item and some idiot keeps adding $5 increments way below my bid.
It almost makes it worth paying more.
