Just so its clear: I would never allow "one of a kind" items to be
operated. For things like that, you create a replica/simulacrum
experience. (Think: SAGE console.)
The stuff I would let people touch are things like Tektronix 4105
terminals (of which I have 10 or so in working order) or limited
interaction with tektronix storage tube terminals (of which I have
several of each model) or Octane workstations (of which I have 19).
"Hands on" can still be done with replicas for rare items. However, I
find museums that are just piles of stuff behind glass to be really
boring.
Its like going to a zoo where all the animals are stuffed.
