Indeed. I
can;t be the only person to have chopped the mini-DIN plug of a
PS/2-compatible keyboard and soldered a 5 pin DIN plug to the cable to
conenct it to a 5170 or clone.
They used to sell adapters for this, I still have a couple in the parts bin.
Actaully, I think they still do (or at least Maplin had them in stock
within living memory :-)). However, the adapter is a lot more expensive
tha na 5 pin DIN plug and much less likely to turn up in my junk box :-).
It's proably more reliable to eliminate a second set of plug and socket
conenctions (the mini-DIN plug on the keyboard to the femail end of the
adapte), but that is not really an issue.
The original Type M has a calbe that plugs in at the keyboard end too,
using one of those SDL connectors. I am told that IBM sold two types of
cables ending in 5 pin DIN (for the 5170, etc) and 6 pin mini-DIN (for the
PS/2 machines). But finding those cables now is non-triival (at least
over here), it's a lot easier to modify the one you have if need be.
