Yeah. One of our three cats we rescued from a

My observation was based on reality, not trying to be funny.
Indeed - I agree with you!
Cats abandoned seem to end up as food out here.
Yes, same around here. It's a very rural area there are lots of critters
that could get them (eagles are particularly fond of things that are
small-cat-sized)
Thankfully rabies doesn't seem to be a big problem where I live (although
naturally all our pets are up to date on shots - and tagged, and
spayed/neutered).
Dogs, if not snatched by the slimier members of
society for use as
dogfighting fodder, usually end up getting found if they're lost.
There are so few houses around here that people mostly know which pets
belong with which dwelling (I bet I could name every pet for a mile in any
direction) so they do usually get reunited quickly. As it's major deer
country here, drivers are usually pretty alert to things crossing the road
too (and the road has wide culverts either side which their 'owners'
usually keep well-mowed)
One memory sticks in my mind about our last cat--she
wasn't afraid of
anything--until she stalked a turkey. Thereafter, when a flock came
though our yard, she'd run for the safety of the house.
:-) Our 'rescue' cat darts from place to place - she loves being outside,
but only if she's in a building or in the woods; she doesn't like open
spaces at all.
