On Windows Putty is "better" than HyperTerminal as a "glass TTY" :

other useful capabilities.
UsbSerial dongles may well not come up on "Com2", but ComHwm+1. The
Windoze Device Manager both lets you investigate com port numbers, and
to an extent change them.
