IANAL but I'm guessing that having a designer with
credentials might help
with certification (or it might not -- the # I heard for UL was ~US$8K so I
abandoned that idea and have no experience),
BEar SUpply quoted $25K for UL.
but I doubt it has anything to
do with protecting yourself against liability.
While using a reputable design firm
won't absolve me of liability, it's
one more point in my favor in a court setting. I tried ot be careful in
my responses that I not imply that outsourcing it does not absolve me of
liability, but I do feel more comfortable about my risk exposure using a
firm that does this for a living.
If people want to zap
themselves and sue you, they always can, at least in the US (whether they
have a case doesn't matter until you get to court, as I understand it).
True,
anyone can sue anyone for pretty much anything.
I
think you'd want to talk to an insurance company for that (unless you're
assuming the pro designers would have their own insurance, but if they did
they'd pass the cost on to you anyway). Just guessing here...
Yes, IEEE
professional liability insurance. Check.
