I like minicom, on Unix (Linux or Mac). Don't know about Windows, I avoid that like
the plague. It's open source, free.

15 USB serial and USB sticks don't work together. You need a cold reboot
often to find the other device.
That depends on whether you have a real OS or not. I've never seen problems on Mac
with USB insert/remove, including with strange USB devices I built myself.
