IMHO - not!. Get a breakout box _as well_ - it's another useful tool. But
the advantage of the inline tester is that it doesn't have jumpers or
switches that you can set wrongly. It just plugs inline between a 25 pin
D plug and socket and monitors the signals. It's not going to cause one
of the signals to disappear.

My thinking is that if I have one box to look for in
my tool box, I won't loose it so fast. If I have
2 or three, I never know if I have them all and
miss one and your dead. Sounds mostly like personal
choice here. I almost always need to adjust switches
anyway, it hasn't been a problem.
Still you also need a gender changer as well. I once
saw an interesting 4 cornered one that a fellow made.
I have never seen a four connector commercial one,
though. Maybe someone makes one.
