I suspect it's the WEEE directive, actually, but it's as bad...
IMHO these regualtions have absolutely nothinh to do with actually
protecting the environment, and everything to do with protecting big
company profits. They are designed ot ensur stuff fails i n short time
(e.g. by iunsisting o nthe sue of inferior solder) and then ensure it
doesn't get repaired.
