Can't speak for KDE here, but recent releases of Gnome have been getting
very snappy. There have been significant and much-needed(!!)
optimizations in the libraries and core applications. gnome-terminal in
2.14 has become significantly faster than xterm(!). Application and
desktop startup times are way faster.
