I don't know if that's any better than the neighbors letting their
cats run wild. I've got one such across the road. On about three
occasions thus far, I've had to tell them that their cat was a greasy
spot on the road and buzzard food. They just shrug it off and get
another cat.
I think it very much depends on the cat. Ours come and go as they please,
but they've got miles of woodland to explore without ever going near the
road. On the few occasions I have seen them cross, they've paused at the
edge and checked for traffic before going over.
Of course I'd be heartbroken if they got squished, but I don't think
they're going to - and they really wouldn't get on with being 'indoor'
cats.
