Depends where on the scale you want your site to be I suppose: straight
picture site at one end, or a more descriptive site with a lot of textual
content and images just to brighten the place up a bit at the other.
There are probably numerous image gallery type apps/engines around to do the
former (and several of them use database-driven back ends). The latter case
though I expect you're going to be investing so much time in writing text and
messing around with layouts that you may as well hand craft the whole thing
anyway.
