It looks pretty clear to me that the panels are made
of some sort of
laminate or else you wouldn't have metal coping.
Maybe, maybe not. Or both.
You would want something to cover the top cut in the wood, because the
end grain takes stain very differently than the rest of the wood, and
looks really pretty bad.
