A bit of preparation helps too -- use fine wet/dry paper to sand off the
top layer of metal, add a drop of solder, tin the wire, then add flux
and solder both together.
Of course I prefer doing the same thing, but with solder tags: cut off a
piece of nickel shim, drill a small hole in it, buff, solder some wire
to the tag, spot-weld the tag to the battery.
I built a spot-welder to do this -- basically, it's a bank of capacitors
