Jim Williams (RIP) did a LOT of research on this. The bulb outperformed the FET by a
gigantic margin. (just sayin'..)
That's a fascinating read; I'll try to find a pointer if you're interested.

Personalites", one of my favorite books)
Fun fact about other contemporaneously-deceased electronics personalities: I have a signed
copy of Bob Pease's "Debugging Analog Circuits" (won it as the door prize
when he came to speak at a neighboring company). He signed it "May all your problems
be medium-sized (so you can find 'em!)". It's absolutely a book worth having
if you're dealing with finicky analog things.
