One of the more common failures of a C64 is the power supply; that's
where I'd start.
The innards of those things, however, are potted--I don't know of
anyone who's been able to get the components out of the potting
compound.
There are workarounds that involve constructing replacements. Here's
a fairly elegant one that preserves the look:
