Nope. Don't have any specific references for you but I know of a few
commercial speech rec boxes way before 1985. In fact, I just got one a
few weeks ago thats from around 1983 or so. And I've seen one (didn't buy
it) from around 1981. Also, there were plenty of telco applications that
used speech rec from the 70s.
Unless you used "1000 word vocab" to qualify the claim, in which case I
still think there may be an earlier contender. Speech recongition goes
back a long way, perhaps as far back as the 50s.
