I think a true engineer (or scientist, hacker, what have you) will use
whatever they consider to be the most appropriate tool for the job in
hand, no matter who else might use it, or what they might use it for.

I knew a mechanical engineer who would use ClarisWorks spreadsheets for
nearly everything. His team was trying to figure out the optimal spacing for
a particle detector photomultiplier tube bracket. A couple guys futzed
around using calculators and paper for an hour. He whipped up a spreadsheet
in ClarisWorks and figured it out in ten minutes
