The tape is from an IBM Magnetic Tape Selectric Compositor.  I sent out an
Email with an IBM Journal Reasearch Report attached - but as it was
uploading, I realized that it was about 1.8MB long.  If our Email system
blocks it because of size, I'll send out a copy of the detailed report to
anyone who sends me a request privately.

Tom, back in about that era IBM produced a thing called the MTST (Magnetic
 Tape ???? Typewriter).  It has been eons since I laid hands on one or
 even seen one so my memory is pretty fuzzy, but I'd not be surprised if
 that was not the use of that tape.
