given "people" permission to do that. They gave Dave Hicks
permission to do it.

No, not exactly but that's what I was told at one the HP calculator
conferences a couple of years ago. I think it was Richard Nelson that told
me that.
From personal correspondence
with Dave Hicks, I know that he specifically requested
and received
permission, but I have not heard of anyone else doing so, nor of any
blanket permission. If they have in fact done that, it would be quite
useful, but it doesn't seem like something that HP's lawyers would be
likely to do.
Why not? If they're going to let Dave copy and sell CDs then why not let
everyone do it?
