Quite apart from the fact that the simpler something is, there less there
is to go wrong....
All of the additional hardware to do it using an existing PC fits in a
Centronics-like dongle. If the PC's printer port is bi-directional, then
there is no need or reason to even open the PC (if you run your PCs in
closed cases)
