No kidding. Right now, I'm working with an ENC28J60 ethernet
controller attached via the SPI port on a PIC. I wonder if the setup
consumes much more power than a couple of front panel lamps on a PDP-
8.

I too have used the ENC28J60; it's a really nice chip. Mine is
running on an ARM chip, a Philips LPC2138. I wrote an interface
layer between it and uIP running under FreeRTOS. Just as I was
getting ready to send the code to the uIP maintainers, someone else
contributed theirs. Blargh. But it was fun to get working.
