Seconded. Autoconf scripts fail so often,
because it is incredibly hard
and painfull to write them well. Most programmers don't have the time,
patience and motivation to dive into this mess. And you need to test
them on each and every platform. Unfortunately the average programmer
doesn't have this extensive test facilities.
