I don't know how a GreNe works but it isn't a normal
discharge color.
I seem to recall that the nixies with orange filters on them have
them because of the effects of the secondary gases (argon,
mercury, etc.) that are present as ionization accelerants.
Presumably the ones which require filters have a higher
concentration of said gases?
