Dunno, my first encounter with Chess was Chess 3.0--it interacted using the
operator's console. But I suppose a game state could have been filed away and
resurrected for the next move. It's been too long.
Bernstein's chess (1957) for the IBM 704 used front-panel switch input with printer
output.
