There are different kinds of 3D printers. The ones that consume
plastic in the form of a wire wound on a spool are much, much cheaper
than the ones that use liquids.
Making something the mass of Jay's tool organizer would likely cost
about $20 in energy and materials. However, the size of a part that
can be printed is much smaller than the size of the organizer, so
you'd have to print parts and combine them into the larger item. That
means a bunch of design work. It'd be easier to make it with a little
woodworking.
