FWIW, it is possible to repair certain classes of faults inside ICs.
These would include rebonding, or repair of metal traces on the die, using focused ion
beam technics.
Decapsulation of plastic housing, to free the die, is also possible using some horrific
mix of acids.
It is also very unlikely to be costeffective, and the repaired chip will be very frail.
But I can see situations in the future where this will be done to rescue classic
computers.
