Can't be the port, that cable works with putty.
May be the wiring and Putty more tolerant?
No experiance with your actual hardware.
A likely problem would be either the computer or terminal is set for
hardware flow control and its not receiving the proper signal from the other
end.
I use a RS-232 tester with LEDs to track down these issues. Can also use
it to jumper in a high or low to see which end needs what.
